9 Tips For Generating More Sales

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

by Terri Gray

Relationship marketing is essential to your business success. Did you know . . .

  • Repeat customers spend 33% more than new customers.

  • Referrals among repeat customers are 107% greater than non-customers.

  • It costs six times more to sell something to a prospect than to sell that same thing to a customer.*

With that in mind, here are 9 ways to increase sales & encourage repeat business:

KEEP IN TOUCH

“You Can Only Get What You Want, If You Help Enough Other People Get What They Want.” ~ Zig Ziglar

1. Make a list of all your satisfied customers and call 5 of them each day asking them about other ways you might be of assistance to them. Talk to them about other products and services you offer and how they might be able to use them.

2. Send hand-written thank you notes immediately after the sale

3. Create a “Welcome Kit” with a special offer for a second purchase that you can send to each new customer

4. Start an email newsletter. If you don’t have your customer’s email addresses, start collecting them now. And make sure that you get email contact info from your future customers. Bookstores and other offline retailers are great at asking if they have your email address so they can send you discount offers. If you have an offline location, be sure to ask your cusomters if they want to receive special offers from you via email and then get their email address. If your business is totally online, have a sign-up form where site visitors can get additional info or have special offers sent to them via email.

We can install mailing list management software on your server, or you can use a 3rd party solution like ConstantContact.com. >> Contact US for more information.

CREATE MORE VALUE

“We get paid for bringing value to the market place.”
~ Jim Rohn

5. Actively look for leads, resources, articles and information of interest, that you can share with your clients and call or email them with the information.

6. Search for your clients on Networking sites like Twitter & LinkedIN and “join them” on that network (You’ll be able to discover what your clients are interested in and can uncover ways that you can better meet their needs.)

7. Start a blog. By adding new content to your site on a regular basis, you can keep your customers coming back to your site for more information and to see what special offers you may have. Blogs also help with your search engine rankings.

You can get a free blog at: Blogger.com or WordPress.com (Be sure to read the terms of service on the free blogs, IE: they can delete or discontinue service at anytime and you could lose your content and you may be authorizing them royalty free rights to use your images, content etc.)

If you would like to have a blog installed on your existing website, let us know. We can install the software, customize it to blend with the look of your website, and provide training in using it. >> Contact Us

ASK FOR REFERRALS & TESTIMONIALS

8. Remember to get testimonials from your satisfied customers. You don’t need anything lengthy for use on your website or in print materials. So sometimes, it is better to ask for a “quote” about their experience working with you or about your product/service.

9. Ask for help. Your satisified customers trust and like you and would love to help you out. Why not ask them if they know anyone that could benefit from your products or services? You could call or email them to touch base and at the end of the conversation say … “By the way, I was wondering if you could help me out?” I’m looking to expand my client base and wondered if you know anyone who . . .

  • Is looking for a new home?
  • Just purchased a new home?
  • Is starting a new business?
  • Just had a baby?
  • Is thinking about remodeling their home?

Referrals are always a great lead source. Many times we just forget to ask. Remember to ask your friends, family and associates as well. Yes, even the people we are closest to forget what we do and that we are always looking for new business!

Twitter 101 – Using Social Media as a Business Tool

Lately, you can’t seem to get away from the term “Social Media” or “Web 2.0″. While there are 100’s of Social Media sites, including Facebook, My Space, Twitter and LinkedIn; Twitter seems to be the fastest growing and a medium well worth learning about. Major corporations are on Twitter (Zappos, Dominos Pizza, Dell, Amazon) as are the major news networks.

I think Social Media is growing so rapidly because the Internet can be so impersonal and we miss “human interaction”. Social Media gives us a way to connect with like minded people and to interact with them. One of the byproducts of these interactions can be an increase in business / sales and referrals from people you have made connections with. If you haven’t tried Twitter yet, or haven’t figured out how you can use it, you’ll find the tips below helpful.

How Can You Use Twitter For Your Business?

  • Network with other business owners
  • Research marketing ideas, trends, and your competition
  • Get help / advice
  • Improve customer service
  • Prospect for new clients
  • Increase your search engine rankings
  • Drive traffic to your website/blog by posting when new info is added
  • Build credibility
  • Locate PR opportunities (writers are looking for people to interview on Twitter!)
  • Announce special offers, events or awards you have received

Don’t let Twitter intimidate you! Just jump in and give it try . . .

Following are a few tips to help you get started:

  1. Decide if you want to use Twitter as a personal or business brand
  2. Choose a Twitter ID: YourName, YName, CompanyName, or WhatYouDo
  3. Sign-up for your Twitter Account at http://www.twitter.com
    - Twitter will verify that your ID is available to use
  4. Find friends/contacts – Twitter can check your email address book to see
if your contacts are using Twitter
  5. Personalize your account – Add your profile info and your photo
  6. Personalize your “look” – You can choose a different Twitter look, create
your own custom look to blend with your website, or choose a free one from
    sites like: http://twitrounds.com/
  7. Find people to follow Do a people search by name to find people you know
in your local area and follow them
    - Search http://www.twellow.com/twellowhood/ and http://www.wefollow.com
to locate people in your area that have a twitter account- Search by keyword to find people discussing topics of interest to you and/or
    your clients (IE: #homeimprovement)
  8. Start Tweeting!

Tweet Etiquette:

Treat your “Tweets” like you would a conversation with someone you meet at a networking or social event. Ask questions, answer questions, and add to an existing conversation. Social media is a way to connect to a community. When using Twitter for business, refrain from too many mundane personal posts or outright ads. You want to share useful information and ideas, but don’t want to generate too much “clutter” or blatant self-promotion. You can post links to useful articles and resources that you have found. You can also use the DM – direct messaging – feature to carry on a more personal conversation with an individual, that may not be of interested to the entire community. Twitter posts can only be 140 characters long, so you will want to use one of these sites to shorten long website addresses that you are sharing with others: http://tinyurl.com or http://bit.ly

More Great Twitter Tips:

The tips below are snipped from Stephanie Frank’s blog. I highly recommend that you visit her site and read the complete post . . . she has really put together a great Tweet plan to follow: http://stephaniefrank.com/productivity/10-things-i-learned-on-the-way-to-10000-twitter-followers/

Tip #2 – Have a beginning strategy. I started out doing 3 things: a) Asking a few friends to “show me around” by telling people I was on Twitter. That got the first qualified followers. b) Engaging with people directly and c) Sending quotes. That’s all I knew how to do and it worked to get started.

Tip #3 – Continuously develop your strategy. Today, there are 5 kinds of tweets that I do regularly: a) My own Daily Do It (tips on personal peak performance) b) Retweet things I personally like or are helpful to others c) Engage with others personally d) Links to blog posts and e) Quotes or one-liners.

Happy Tweeting!

by Terri Gray

Having a website is a great start to your marketing efforts. However, to make the best use of your website you need to advertise it in much the same way you would a physical location. You have to get the word out about your business website in order for people to find you. Below are some of the best free and low cost methods of building traffic and exposure for your website:

Post Your Website Address.
Remember to ALWAYS include your website address any where you have your phone number or mailing address. This includes: business card, yellow page ad, pens/pencils, newspaper ads, stationary, envelopes, mugs, magnets, brochures, answering machine message, signage, vehicle . . . etc.

Google Adwords helps spur traffic quickly.
Just login to: adwords.google.com and create an ad campaign. Google lets you bid on your keywords and you can set your daily and monthly ad limit. For example, you could set a $3/day with a $30/month spending budget. Make sure you target specific keywords for your local market.

Start a Blog.
You can create a Free blog at: blogger.com or wordpress.com Cross link your blog & your website. Use keyword rich content in your blog posts and link to your website within the content too. Contact us if you would like help installing a blog and customizing the look of it.

Submit Articles.
Write and submit articles to the various Article Banks. Your articles should be approx. 300-500 words in length and be of interest to your target market. Be sure to include a brief bio and link to your website. Some article submission sites include: Digg.com, Ezinearticles.com, all-in-one-business.com/groups and ideamarketers.com. Don’t forget to also search for local businesses that may have newsletters or articles on their websites. You can offer your content for free inclusion in their publications, provided your brief bio and link to your site remain intact.

Participate in Social Networking Sites & Online Communities.
Add your website address to your profile on these sites. Ones to check out include: MySpace.com, Facebook.com, hi5.com, Xanga.com, linkedin.com, reunion.com, friendster.com, bebo.com, tagged.com, classmates.com, twitter.com, and Squidoo.com. Also post to other Message Boards, Forums & Blogs – Have a hobby or a special interest? Find local websites with forums, blogs etc. that you have an interest in. You can also check out sites like: answers.yahoo.com, home.ivillage.com/messageboards and local AOL boards. You can find Terri Gray on LinkedIn and Twitter.

Advertise on CraigsList.org.
Craigs List is free in most cities. Be sure to choose your category carefully, and don’t spam the list. You don’t want to be blacklisted or to have your posts removed. Read the rules and be responsible with your posts.

 Send out Newsletters.
By sending out periodic email newsletters, you are reminding people of your services on a regular basis. You can encourage your readers to forward your newsletters to other people. You can subscribe to our free marketing newsletter here.

 Submit Press Releases.
Keep in mind, that press releases should not be “ads” for your company. They need to have a news worthy angle to them. If you don’t know how to write a good press release, you may want to outsource this for best results. Paid submission services: Prweb.com, PRNewswire.com, PR.com, and OpenPR.com. Free submission services: PrLog.org, BetaNews.com, I-Newswire.com and Free-Press-Release.com. You should also fax your press releases to local media as well. View PR tips and a sample press release on Bizine.com

 Contests and Drawings.
Hold a contest or drawing on your website. This could be for a free dinner for 2 or a gift card at a local home improvement store. Cross link with the businesses that are providing the give-aways. Announce the contest/drawing on your blog, in your newsletter and through a press release.

Exchange Links with Strategic Partners.
Search for local merchants, Realtors etc. that you feel are targeting your same market. By exchanging links with them, you are creating a win-win for each of you.

Don’t get overwhelmed with all of the opportunities there are to market yourself. Just start with a few things that look like they will be easy for you to do and then build in some time for yourself to incorporate them into your marketing plan. Add others as you go along and you’ll be building targeted links to your site that will help generate a steady flow of traffic.
